Driver ploughs into island
Tuesday 13th March 2007, 7:11PM GMT.
A motorist lost control of his car and ploughed into a Shropshire traffic island.
The accident happened at the Muller island on the A53 at Market Drayton shortly after 5.30pm yesterday.
West Mercia Police spokeswoman Maria Hawkaluk said: “The car was a blue Vauxhall Vectra which ended up in the island near the Muller factory.”
The car, which appeared to have been heading out of the town, failed to negotiate the busy roundabout and ploughed straight into bushes, damaging some of the signs on the island.
The driver escaped from the wreckage unhurt and no one else was injured in the incident.
West Mercia Ambulance Service spokesman, Steve Parry, said paramedics were called to the scene but there were no casualties.
A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service today confirmed they had not been called out to help manage the situation.
Police officers cordoned off the stranded car which remained stuck on the island waiting to be recovered today.
Miss Hawkaluk said a man was arrested following the accident and has since been charged with failing to provide a specimen.
