Food centre serves up 50 jobs

Fifty jobs will be created at a £2.5 million food centre when it opens in Ludlow next month.

The Ludlow Food Centre will be a regional centre of excellence for food and drink and provide training for butchers, bakers, delicatessen staff, greengrocers and cooks.

Experts believe it will help cement Ludlow’s reputation as the nation’s rural food capital.

Today Sandy Boyd, manager of the food centre, said builders were putting the finishing touches to the project and it would open on April 18.

He said some vacancies were still available for shop workers, a cheesemaker and a jam maker and the centre was expected to create about 50 jobs.

Mr Boyd said: “We are in the final phases of construction at the moment. There are lots of construction workers on site. We had hoped to open at Easter but it now looks as though we will open on April 18.”

Mr Boyd said more than 200 applications had been received from people who wanted to be tutors.

He added: “We still have two key vacancies and they are for a cheesemaker and a jam maker. There are also vacancies for retail staff.”

Today Councillor Graeme Perks said it would help to cement Ludlow’s reputation for excellence in food and drink, adding: “There will be excellent training opportunities for people who want careers in the food and drink industries.”
