Peters happy at net goal result

Saturday 10th March 2007, 12:07PM GMT.

Gary PetersShrewsbury Town chief Gary Peters has hailed his side’s impressive goal difference as being “as good as an extra point” as they target a late surge into the play-offs.

Town have a goal difference of plus 18, having scored 50 goals and conceded just 32 so far this season.

That compares favourably with Wycombe Wanderers, the club occupying the bottom play-off spot at present, whose own goal difference is plus 14.

The position looks even stronger given that Shrewsbury have three games in hand on Wanderers going into the final push.

The performance in the attacking third is particularly pleasing to Peters, a manager who has previously been more associated with producing mean defences rather than scoring a lot of goals.

“I think there’s only one team that’s got a better goals per game ratio than us, and that’s Lincoln,” the Town chief declared.

“Walsall have got more goals than us and so have MK Dons, but they’ve played four more games than us.

“If you look at the ratio of goals per game, we’re second in the division, and that, for a defensive manager like myself who prides himself in producing teams that don’t let goals in, is very good.

“We’re doing well at the other end too, because we’re fourth best in terms of goals against.

“Our goal difference is like an extra point on anyone else because there is no-one around the play-offs who is going to have a better goal difference than us.

“The goalscoring is something that’s been good this season, but we’re not playing in a care-free way. We’re organised and we don’t leave the back door open.”

l Shrewsbury’s Official Supporters’ Club are holding an evening with the club’s new chief executive Steve Wellbeloved on Monday March 19 (7.30pm).

The session in the executive lounge at Gay Meadow will give fans the chance to question Wellbeloved on the move to the New Meadow.
