Council approval for mast
Thursday 8th March 2007, 11:02AM GMT.
Plans for a 200ft high wind mast on land in rural Shropshire have been approved by councillors, despite protests.
The 60m mast will be put up on farm land near Market Drayton by energy company Nuon Renewables. It will be the tallest in the county.
District councillors yesterday voted by five to four in favour of the application, which had provoked hundreds of objections from people in the area between Woore and Loggerheads.
During yesterday’s meeting at the Festival Drayton Centre in Market Drayton councillors were heckled and jeered by campaigners furious at the decision.
They claimed councillors had been nowhere near the land at Lower Farm, Bearstone Road, during a site visit and were also unhappy that a third of the committee was missing.
Nuon will use the mast to measure wind speeds in Norton-in-Hales ahead of possible plans to develop a wind turbine farm.
But campaigners believe this will be an eyesore, devalue their properties and create unwanted noise. More than 450 objections were received.
