School to get new classrooms
Saturday 3rd March 2007, 11:20AM GMT.
A school whose buildings were labelled not fit for purpose by a Mid Wales AM is to get new classrooms this year.
Ysgol Cedewain in Newtown – described by AM Kirsty Williams on Wednesday as a school “whose walls are falling in” – has been told extra classroom accommodation in the form of mobile teaching blocks will be provided by September.
Head Peter Tudor said the news came at the same time as they had been given the outcome of a government inspection in which Ysgol Cedewain came out as “outstanding”.
Mr Tudor said he was delighted with the Estyn inspection report that included seven ‘grade ones’, the highest grades possible.
Mr Tudor added that Ysgol Cedewain was one of the fastest growing schools in Wales, having doubled in size over the last five years.
He said: “Kirsty Williams is aware of the situation at Cedewain and has supported the school’s requests for replacement of buildings which are clearly unfit for purpose.”
“Two weeks ago we were informed by Powys County Council that new classrooms would be provided for September 2007. This will significantly improve our provision but is still far short of the standards we feel our pupils and their families deserve.”
A Powys spokeswoman confirmed that Ysgol Cedewain was to get four new mobile teaching blocks for September.
