Virgin blocks London trains bid
Thursday 1st March 2007, 11:33AM GMT.
Shropshire’s direct rail link to London has hit the buffers following objections from train giant Virgin.
The company bidding to restore non-stop services to the capital has announced it is scrapping its current bid and will now submit fresh plans.
Virgin Trains is objecting to the Wrexham, Shropshire & Marylebone Railway (WSMR) Company’s scheme to run trains to the capital.
The West Coast Mainline operator has a contract which protects it from competition on the line from Wolverhampton to London. It is also worried about extra services clogging up the busy route.
It means the Office of Rail Regulation, which oversees all train companies, will reject the WSMR bid, forcing it to change plans.
It had been hoped the service would be running by the spring, but the dispute will delay the move until December at the earliest.
So now the Wrexham & Shropshire company must submit a fresh plan for consultation.
In a statement WSMR said a new round of consultation was now “inevitable” and that it had decided to submit a new application.
“As a result of the process, the company is now unlikely to be able to implement services until around December 2007,” it said.
John Nelson, a director of the company, said: “We are keen to provide rail services that serve the communities in Wrexham and Shropshire as soon as possible.
“Our revised proposals are even stronger than before and we intend to submit them to the ORR within a matter of days.”
Virgin spokesman David Ewart said: “We would like to see details of the resubmission so we can study it. Our principle objection is capacity on the line between Birmingham International and Coventry. Further trains running would affect our services.”
Shropshire rail campaigner Mansel Williams said: “The company is not walking away and in the fullness of time a through train service between north Wales, Shropshire and London is achievable. This company is our best practical and achievable means by which we can do it.”

Just another example of how Shropshire is considered a lesser state of existance than the rest of the country. Other rural counties don’t have to fight to have services through to London. Why is it that we do?

Why bother with the Shrewsbury route just travel by car to Stafford (25 miles) and arive in London in 90 minutes or less rather than the 160 minute journey traveling from Shrewsbury

It is the big company versus the small company – Virgin don’t want their prices undercut!

It is interesting that Virgin accuse SKY of preventing customer choice then block customer choice by preventing a direct train service for Wrexham/Shropshire train customers.

Is it not strange that, in this so-called ‘privatised’ railway, we have the heavily subsidised monopoly operator frustrating the private enterprise initiative of a new comer which is offering a new service without the need for subsidy.
Disappointing too that the West Midland’s railway infrastructure is seemingly incapable of providing capacity for a few extra trains between Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, New St and Coventry or so the train operators would have us believe!

Before we demand a new train service between Shropshire and London, why don’t we demand a train service to Birmingham that is reliable, punctual and not piteously slow or dangerously overcrowded?

Unfortunately, despite the so called “open access” Virgin have a protective contract with Network Rail that enables them to hinder WSMR’s efforts to run a direct London service. Yet again our political ;eaders have failed the people of Shropshire.

With Shrewsbury advertised as being a “gateway” to Wales it amazes me at the limited number of stations you can get to from Shrewbsury. Great I can get to B’ham or Manchester, but what about journeys to Stafford or Stoke, never mind to larger cities such as London, Bristol, Derby, or Notthingham? In some cases I would need to change two or three times.

Well, what a surprise. The Virgin empire shows it’s true colours again. Whilst activley painting a wonderfully colourful vista as the people’s champion in order to boost profits and gain market share, it stifles other businesses using legal agreements so carefully worked out by it’s huge corporate legal arm.
The time has come for a full Parliamentary enquiry into the behaviour of our private rail companies. It’s time the rail network was managed in order to provide a service to the elctorate, and not merely to fleece a profit out of it.
