Bosses at Severn Trent Water plan to demolish part of a sewage station and replace it with a new one in a Shropshire village in a bid to help resolve long-term flooding problems.

Plans have been submitted to Bridgnorth District Council for the refurbishment of the pumping station in Barrington Close, Albrighton.

Bosses say the proposed works are necessary as the existing station has now exceeded its design life.

The existing pumping house building would be demolished on completion of the project.

Ben Smallman, spokesman for Severn Trent Water, said: “We have plans in place to replace and refurbish our existing pumping station in Albrighton, which will help to increase the capacity of our sewers in the area around Barrington Close.

“Most of the equipment will be stored underground and will not pose a great aesthetic problem for nearby residents.

Severn Trent has set aside £2 million for three separate projects in the village in an effort to improve flooding problems.

“Severn Trent Water is doing everything it can to resolve sewer flooding problems in Albrighton and we are treating sewer flooding problems in the village as a priority.”

Families in Newport Road, Woodland Close, Barclay Close, Windsor Road, Loak Road, Fairlawn and Bushnell Road were among the properties worst affected by flash floods last July.

Jim Lindsay, of The Old Bush pub in Woodland Close, said: “Agencies need to work together to stop the floods happening again.”
