Horse power helps family
Tuesday 27th February 2007, 12:00PM GMT.
In the days before widespread mechanisation, work on the farm had to be done by hand – and by horse.
This photo was loaned to us by E Kath Powis, of Tenbury Wells, who says: “It was taken in about 1942 of the loading of sugar beet at Field Farm, Little Hereford, near Ludlow. It shows my father Mr D R Hamer and family with Ventor the grey mare in the cart shafts.”
On the back of the print it says: “Stan, Margaret, dad & myself gathering sugar beet on ‘Ten Acres’ with Ventor in the shafts.”
