Ice goal kings ready to ‘Roar’
Saturday 24th February 2007, 11:06AM GMT.
One of the most lethal goalscoring partnerships of modern ice hockey will be reunited for Roar 28 – the testimonial game of Telford Tigers’ Mark Hazlehurst – in April.
Steve Chartrand and Luc Chabot dominated the scoring charts in the 1990s when they played for Tigers’ arch rivals Solihull, with Chartrand twice clocking up more than 340 points in a season.
Both players have retired from playing, with Chabot now assistant coach at Elite league Coventry Blaze – the team which gave Chartrand his testimonial in 2004 and retired his No 12 shirt.
The brilliant Canadians are both looking forward to lacing up the skates one more time to support Hazlehurst’s chosen charities – the Melissa Wolfe Appeal and the Severn Hospice Telford Appeal.”It will be good to play with Steve Chartrand again, as well as alongside Claude Dumas (now the Telford coach) and Mark Hazlehurst of course.
“It will be good to see all the old guys and bring back the big rivalry, but this time for some good causes,” said Chabot.
Ontario-born Chabot played for teams throughout the UK after coming over in 1986 to play for Ayr Bruins – but he has special memories of the rivalry between the Tigers and Barons. “They were always tough games between Solihull and Telford,” said the 41-year-old.
“Mark is supporting two very worthy charities with his testimonial, and I am pleased to be helping them.”
Chartrand confessed: “I’m looking forward to playing with Luc again, although I think we might be a bit slower than we used to be. I don’t really get chance to skate now.
“It will be a bit strange because it’s a few years since I went back to Telford,” said the 38-year-old, originally from Quebec. ”
Hazlehurst said: “I am so honoured that Chartrand and Chabot are playing in my testimonial game.”
Roar 28 is on Saturday, April 28 (5.15pm) and tickets cost £10 (seating) and £8 (standing), with family tickets available too.
