Pressure on to halt PO cuts

post1.gifThe Government is coming under increasing pressure to minimise the proposed cutbacks in the post office network, with campaigners urging a rethink as they took their fight to Westminster.

Thousands of protesters attended yesterday’s rally to call on the Government not to press ahead with plans to shut 2,500 outlets.

Countryside Alliance chief executive Simon Hart, who was brought up in Shifnal, gave a rousing speech.

He said the closure of 2,500 post offices was a community issue that straddled the rural and urban divide.

“We all understand that there is more to your post office than buying stamps,” he said.

“There are numerous examples of service that goes way beyond the norm: The post office in Scotland that provides a free phone for pensioners; one in Wales that has a savings club for children; and another which delivers groceries.

“This rally is. . . about highlighting the decline in a range of rural services.”
