Another business will close

Post office users in a Mid Wales village will have to trek miles away from home for the service from the end of next month, after the owners announced they were closing.

Linda Emm, of Foel Post Office and Country Stores, said she had decided to close the business from the end of March as it was not making enough profit.

She said she had been seeking a buyer for the business for the past year, but was now seeking planning permission for a change of use, after she was told the property was worth as much as a home as it was as a business.

“Unfortunately, it looks as if people are going to lose the service,” Mrs Emm said today.

“It means they will have to travel a long way in the future, because we are the only post office between Mallwyd and Llanfair Caereinion.

“There is one north of here, towards Lake Vyrnwy, but that’s a long way out of the way as well.”

She said the business had been for sale for “about a year now” before she offered her formal resignation to Post Office Counters in December.

She added: “We’ve gone for change of use because we’re told the property is just as valuable as a home, rather than a business.

“But if somebody came along within the next few weeks and came up with a serious offer, we would sell it as a business.”
