Yes, it’s Valentine’s Day again (why is there no Valentine equivalent of “Bah, Humbug”? “Bah, Last Rolo”, for instance).And nothing quite says “I love you” like a message in the Shropshire Star (actually, a romantic home cooked meal, a massage with sensual oils, a surprise trip to a tranquil cottage with a roaring log fire all say it better, but that would seriously dent the Shropshire Star’s income so keep sending the messages please. Thank you).

The best thing about February 14 is reading these messages in the paper. I really hope the intended recipients recognise themselves and understand the messages, because – probably by design – they make no sense to the rest of us.

“Cross Keys Girl, with a big bum. ‘Verzeihen sie’. E doesn’t dance.”

Eh?

But the one that got us most confused was the number 831. It appeared in a few of the ads today. Eg: “To the sweetest 831 and 72. See me??”

What the…

Turns out (thank god for Google) that 831 means eight letters, three words, one meaning (err) but as for 72, still anyone’s guess.

Answers on a Valentine’s Card please. Only way I’ll get one (altogether now…)
