Shop set to close

A shop in the centre of Bridgnorth will close at the end of the month and the owners claim high rates have forced them out of business.

Stuart and Angela Wood, who run Indulgence, in Postern Gate, off High Street, said they applied for rate relief from the district council but were turned down, and now they cannot afford to carry on.

Mrs Wood said she was disappointed Bridgnorth District Council did not provide more help, and now she and her husband faced losing their jobs.

“The council says it is all for helping struggling businesses but the letter said they did not feel we were valuable to the town,” she said.

Council officers said today they were sorry Indulgence, which sells specialist soaps and gifts, was closing but each hardship rate relief had to be considered on its own merits.

Bob Braddock, of the council, said: “We regret the high cost of rates but as a council we cannot influence that.”

Mrs Wood said the rates were £552 a month, on top of an annual rent of £14,000. She and her husband are the only members of staff.

Meanwhile, a successful shop which has been in Much Wenlock for three years is expanding and moving to Shrewsbury.

Hortica gardening shop has now closed in Much Wenlock and staff say they hope to open the new shop on Wyle Cop on March 24.
