Fears over burning house
Wednesday 7th February 2007, 10:49AM GMT.
Fire and ambulance crews were called to an suspected arson attack at a house in Shrewsbury after receiving a report that there were people trapped inside the burning building.
Three fire engines attended the blaze in Brunel Way, Belle Vue, at around 7.40pm last night.
However, a spokesman for the Shropshire Fire and Rescue service said that a thorough search of the property by fire crews showed it to be empty.
The spokesman said the fire had been contained to the downstairs area.
Daphne Lewis, a spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said that two crews had attended the incident following a call at 7.40pm.
“There were persons reported in the building at the time but at 7.57pm we were advised that there was nobody found inside the premises,” she said.
Fire crews were stood down at 8.10pm.
Police spokesman Richard Ewels said: “It is being treated as arson by the police. We believe it was started deliberately and are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information.
“The police helicopter did fly over in connection with the incident but didn’t find anything of significance.”
The ambulance service was not needed to take anyone to hospital following the incident.
Mr Ewels said that the fire had taken hold in the living area of the house and appeared to be a serious blaze. No one was injured.
Witnesses can contact Shrewsbury Police on 08457 444888 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
