Beating a retreat to Welsh idyll

Saturday 3rd February 2007, 7:35PM GMT.

A Shropshire bookshop is inviting folk to get away from it all with a good book, by hosting the first of its “readers retreats” in Wales this month.

The event hosted by Wenlock Books in Much Wenlock is from February 24 to 27, and will offer an “oasis of calm” in idyllic surroundings at Broniwan, Rhyd Lewis, Llandysul, Ceredigion. Places are limited to seven.

Anna Dreda of Wenlock Books said: “We shall each have our own lovely room with tea-making facilities and views either across to the Preseli Hills, or over the 45 acres of meadow, stream and grassland.

“The dining room and sitting room, furnished with country antiques, books and watercolours, look out onto the terraced lawn where finches, nuthatches and a woodpecker come to the feeder. Far away from roads or towns, we offer an oasis of calm in which we shall be free to enjoy reading, writing, drawing or walking.”

In the afternoons they would have use of a converted barn with a large oak table and wood burning stove, where they could read, write, or draw in silence.

“For those who prefer to indulge in quiet conversation as they read or write, there is a comfortable sitting room, also with wood burning stove. In the evenings, we will gather together to discuss short stories which will have been read aloud to the group after breakfast and lunch, or we may enjoy a visit from a local poet.”

Full cost of the retreat is £250, which will include accommodation, three meals a day, morning coffee and afternoon tea.

Anna said people on the retreat were being asked to make their own way to Broniwan, and to contribute a bottle of wine to share at the evening meal.
