Teacher, 50, wakes from coma
Wednesday 24th January 2007, 3:00PM GMT.
A Shropshire teacher seriously injured in a coach crash in the Alps has woken from his coma. Max Bishop is the head of IT at Kingsland Grange School in Shrewsbury.
He has been in hospital in Grenoble, France, since the accident on January 5.
But today Kingsland Grange School spokesman Ben Jason said Mr Bishop, a father of two from Broseley, was brought out of the sustained coma last night.
He said Mr Bishop was making a full recovery and would probably just be kept in hospital for a few more days for observation.
The 50-year-old was on a coach carrying a skiing party of more than 40 pupils, staff and parents from the school when it crashed on the way to the airport.
He has worked at the school in Roman Road for nearly 20 years.
Mr Jason said: “Last night at 11pm, we got some very good news that Max has come out of his coma and is very well. All the signs are positive, he is speaking and has regained his memory.
“It’s great news and we are overjoyed.
“You never know what the outcome is when these things happen. There could be loss of memory.
“But he is speaking and recognises his wife and knows who he is. They are all very good positive signs and we are extremely hopeful of a full recovery.”
Mr Jason said Mr Bishop’s wife Lisa was at his bedside in Grenoble and their children were being looked after by their grandparents at the family home.
Three other adults were treated for minor injuries after the accident on the border of the Isere and Hautes-Alpes departments.
Everyone in the party returned home on the day of the accident except for Mr Bishop.
