Concern grows for lorry driver
Monday 22nd January 2007, 11:29AM GMT.
Mystery surrounds the disappearance of a lorry driver today after his vehicle was found abandoned in an Oswestry layby.
Police are now investigating after the lorry was discovered in the layby at Grandad’s Cafe, just south of Oswestry on the A5. The discovery was made when cafe owner Roger Parker arrived to open up at 6.30am on Saturday.
Two days on, the driver who should not have been travelling through Shropshire, has not been found.
He was travelling from Rugby to his home in Colwyn Bay. Officers from West Mercia Police have used dogs and the force helicopter to search the surrounding fields over the weekend. The lorry is owned by Grand Prix Express Parcels and Pallets, based in Rhyl. Police today said the driver’s employers and his wife do not know where he is and are very worried.
Sergeant Dave Meyer, of Oswestry police, said: “The lorry should not really have been on the A5 – it’s not part of his route.”
Sergeant Meyer said the driver had left all of his personal possessions in the cab of the lorry and the lorry still had its full load inside.
The missing man, who has not been named, is described as in his 30s, about 6ft, of medium build and was wearing a green fleece, blue denim jeans, work boots and has black scruffy hair.
He speaks with a Welsh accent.
