Muslim chaplain wanted at jail
Saturday 13th January 2007, 11:52AM GMT.
Shrewsbury’s Dana Prison is appointing a Muslim chaplain to ensure the “spiritual and pastoral” needs of Islamic inmates are met.
The salary for the part-time post is up to £35,000 a year (pro rata) and the successful applicant will work 10 hours a week at the jail, in Howard Street.
In the advert for the chaplain role, prison chiefs say they are looking for someone with an in-depth knowledge of Islam and a recognised qualification in Islamic studies.
Prison governor Gerry Hendry said the new post was being created as Shrewsbury prison had a growing number of Muslim inmates.
“We have an increase of people of the Muslim faith within prisons in general and within Shrewsbury in particular and the new post is reflecting that,” he said.
“We already have in place a range of of Christian faith ministers and a part-time Sikh minister and we are now looking to have a part-time Muslim one.”
