Ex-lawyer goes bankrupt
Monday 8th January 2007, 7:37PM GMT.
A former Shrewsbury lawyer who was struck off for pocketing a client’s cash has declared himself bankrupt. Stephen Morecroft was ordered to pay £22,885.42 in costs by a Solicitors’ Disciplinary Tribunal in May.
The hearing was told Mr Morecroft was given £10,897.06 by a client for a deposit on a new home to be bought off-plan.
In November 2005 the Law Society intervened in his firm, Morecroft and Co, in Barker Street, Shrewsbury, and officials discovered the firm’s accounts held only £1,194.
The tribunal struck off Morecroft after finding a string of allegations, which included accounts rule breaches and failing to act in the best interests of clients, proved against him.
On December 28 a bankruptcy order against Mr Morecroft was made at Shrewsbury County Court.
Mr Morecroft said today: “I have got nothing to say. It is the result of the costs of the Law Society from the intervention in the firm.”
He said he was still living in the Shrewsbury area and applying for jobs in other fields.
Mr Morecroft had unsuccessfully tried to get his hearing at the tribunal adjourned because he was on holiday.
But chairman Alan Ground rejected his application saying it was a “head in the sand approach”.
