A new flavour of Shropshire

Monday 8th January 2007, 7:34PM GMT.

Caroline and Bruce McMichaelAt a time when Shropshire is steadily building a reputation for quality, locally produced food and drink, a new free publication has been launched in the county and surrounding areas.

In tune with the seasons, Taste Shropshire is published quarterly and aims to re-connect consumers with their food and the landscape where it has been produced.

Editor Bruce McMichael says: “Consumers are getting increasingly concerned about the quality of the food they are eating and feeding their children.

“They want to know where it came from, that the animals were well looked after and that the production of food was easy on the environment.”

The magazine will encourage links between food and tourism, and will feature events to promote local food such as food festivals while raising awareness of seasonal, local specialities such as game.

Advertising and marketing director Caroline McMichael says: “Taste Shropshire is unique in providing people with a reference point to help them find all the wonderful food and drink the county has to offer.

“Consumers are starting to realise that buying locally makes sense both in supporting local businesses and reducing food miles.”

The first issue celebrates six of the best food businesses in Shropshire and offers ideas for winter pub walks, as well as providing a detailed list of farmers’ markets and events.

“This is truly a local business,” says Bruce. “The magazine was written, photographed, designed and printed in Shropshire.

“There is a huge pool of culinary and creative talent in Shropshire and the border counties and Taste Shropshire is here to celebrate and promote it to a wider audience.”

The magazine will be free to readers, who will be able to pick up a copy from many outlets including delis, farm shops, farmers’ markets, quality restaurants, tourist offices and libraries within Shropshire, bordering counties and the wider West Midlands.
