Showground licence threat
Saturday 23rd December 2006, 11:30AM GMT.
Shrewsbury’s West Mid Showground could have its licence revoked over claims that it is in breach of its conditions.
Council licensing bosses will meet in the new year to decide the future of the site on Berwick Road, which has hosted events including a vehicle rally and bonfire display this year, as well as the annual agricultural show. However nearby residents have made complaints about the site.
They have complained about problems with noise, alleging that the showground is breaching its conditions and raised concerns about non-licensed activities, including use of camping and PA systems.
Council bosses have now received an application to review the showground’s licence from resident John Leach – which could result in the committee members revoking it.
The review process was not set up to address residents’ concerns but planning officers say the evidence submitted by Mr Leach, of Darwin Gardens, shows he had been disturbed by noise. It was therefore accepted.
Members, who will discuss the issue on January 3, may also decide to take no further action, to modify the conditions of the licence, issues warnings, suspend the licence, or remove the designated premises supervisor.
Mr Leach said the bonfire and fireworks event on November 5 had been the “straw that broke the camel’s back”.
The licensing sub-committee will be looking at the section of the licence that covers the prevention of public nuisance.
But West Mid Show chairman David Tudor said he was confident the showground would have its licence renewed.
He said: “I can’t anticipate how the council will react, but hopefully all will be well on January 3.”
Mr Tudor said there had also been numerous letters of support of the licence renewal from long term residents living in Coton Manor and Darwin Gardens, near to the showground.
Mr Tudor said efforts had been made to reduce noise levels.
