Opik will not face love quiz

lembit1tm11.jpegLiberal Democrat leaders in Mid Wales have called off a meeting with Montgomeryshire MP Lembit Opik over national publicity surrounding his personal life.

In a statement, they said they were “fully satisfied” that the end of his relationship with TV weather presenter Sian Lloyd, and his new affair with Cheeky Girl Gabriela Irimia, was “entirely private”, and had “no political implications”.

But in Newtown, members of the public shouted “cheeky cheeky” at Mr Opik as he walked up Broad Street in the town centre yesterday.

Mr Opik had been due to appear before Liberal Democrat officials in his Montgomeryshire constituency after concern was raised that the MP had been making headlines more for his love life than his political work.

But a statement issued by the Liberal Democrat group said the issue was settled at a pre-Christmas social gathering on Thursday.

“Lembit Opik took the opportunity to update those present, in confidence, regarding recent events,” the statement said.

It added there were no plans to hold a meeting to discuss the matter further.

Mr Opik added: “We talked about recent events at our social gathering and we decided not to have a meeting in the end.”
