Square to host festive singing

Wednesday 20th December 2006, 3:28PM GMT.

All AngelsOrganisers expect more than 7,000 people to pack into Shrewsbury’s Square tonight to celebrate in festive style.

Late night shoppers can sing all their favourite carols, with the highlight of the show being a performance by Shrewsbury teenager Melanie Nakhla and her classical group All Angels.

They will sing songs from their new album and perform their cover version of Robbie Williams’ Angels, which they hope will land them the Christmas number one record spot.

Carols in the Square will start at 5.10pm with the Belvidere School Band, who will march from the Music Hall to the High Street. All Angels will perform at 5.25pm until 5.45pm, when they will lead the crowd in singing Silent Night.

15-year-old Charlotte Edwards, from Oswestry, who won BBC Radio Shropshire’s search for a soloist competition, will sing the first verse of Once in Royal David’s City at the event to be broadcast live from 6pm to 7pm.

The Wem Jubilee Band will accompany the carol singing and piper Mike Shanahan will also play.

The Halfway House Male Voice Choir will be on stage with the Lorna Croft Children’s Choir.

Adam Burgan, the Music Hall’s programme and marketing manager, said: “I think this year is going to be quite exceptional.

“Thousands packed the Square last year. It’s a really lovely atmosphere and just makes Christmas.”
