Swimming pool future secured
Friday 15th December 2006, 7:17PM GMT.
The future of Wem swimming pool has been secured for the next five years after the company which saved it from closure had its lease extended.
Campaigners launched a fight to keep Wem Swimming Centre open after it was closed in March 2005 by the district council.
It was reopened about six months later after a deal was struck between North Shropshire District Council and site owner Wem Town Council.
Glynis Sheppard, managing director of Wem Swimming Centre Ltd, was given a 13-month lease to run it and it was renewed by town councillors last night.
Members discussed arrangements for the lease behind closed doors.
Today Wem Town Council clerk Jane Drummond confirmed details of the new lease had now been finalised.
She said a five year extension had been granted, ensuring the pool’s future.
Town mayor and council chairman Councillor Peggy Carson said it was wonderful news for the town.
“Wem Swimming Centre Ltd is very happy it has all been sorted out. The pool is doing extremely well and people are using it.
“This is all we were hoping for and it’s now secure for at least five years.
“The pool is extremely well run and we have only had favourable comments about it, which makes everything that has happened worthwhile. On behalf of the town I would like to thank Glynis and her staff for what they are doing.”
When the pool closed the decision prompted outrage from residents and a petition with thousands of names was drawn up.
An action group was also set up to secure the centre and Save Wem Pool posters went up in hundreds of windows.
