Police in plea to fans

Friday 15th December 2006, 12:04PM GMT.

Police today urged Shrewsbury Town football fans to have another trouble-free derby game when League Two rivals Hereford United visit Gay Meadow for the second time in two months.

Town supporters were praised for their conduct after November’s FA Cup goalless first round clash which passed off without major incident.

Just two people were arrested for public order offences on the day.

West Mercia Police said there would once again be a highly visible presence in and around the town centre tomorrow for the midday kick-off.

Police chiefs have urged fans to have an enjoyable but trouble-free time, vowing not to tolerate anti-social behaviour.

Superintendent Pete Lightwood said: “Saturday’s derby is a ticket-only match for Hereford supporters so I would strongly advise those without a ticket not to travel to Shrewsbury.

“We are keen for the genuine supporters to come and enjoy this fixture, but warn those who are out to cause trouble that we will deal with them robustly. We will not tolerate anti-social behaviour, as it not only spoils things for the genuine fans, but for the residents of Shrewsbury too.

“Those who cause trouble are not genuine football fans, they simply use the game as an excuse for a fight and to cause problems.”

Police have encouraged fans to park at the Shirehall in Abbey Foregate to reduce the number of cars in the town centre. St Julian’s car park, which had been closed due to the floods, is now open.
