Plans for offices and hotel
Wednesday 13th December 2006, 7:16PM GMT.
Plans have been revealed for a large retail and leisure development on the outskirts of Oswestry. An outline application has been submitted to Oswestry Borough Council.
It is for nearly 10 acres of land known as Rod Meadows, Shrewsbury Road, near the Mile End roundabout.
The proposal by Oswestry-based J Ross Developments, includes a hotel and restaurant, trade counter, car sales, child care facilities, new commercial offices and a small business park.
Developers say hundreds of jobs could be created if it is approved. The application states: “Although there are no operators formally associated with each of the proposed units at this stage, the scale and format of the proposed development has been specifically designed to suit national operators.
“For example, the hotel element of the proposed development will be marketed towards national hoteliers for a roadside “lodge” type development including Whitbread, Premier Travel Inn and Holiday Inn Express.”
Oswestry Borough Council leader David G Lloyd said having land ready for development could be the difference between a business coming to the area or not.
“We clearly want to encourage industrial and commercial development, we want to do everything to facilitate that,” he said.
“The council had an exceptionally good record for siting traditional industry, but that has changed, with more computers and light industry, and a commercial requirement for people using it.”
The application is to go before the development committee’s next available meeting. The applicant was unavailable for comment.
