Wardens hand out 24 fines

Parking wardens handed out 24 tickets on their first day patrolling the county to enforce the new legislation handed to local authorities.

Drivers in Shrewsbury were the worst culprits where 12 tickets were handed out to motorists parked illegally.

Wardens in Bridgnorth and across North Shropshire issued six tickets each, but drivers in Ludlow escaped any fines thanks to a fault with a pay and display machine.

Sandy Harper, manager of ParkRight which works on behalf of the borough and district councils, said the new wardens had an immediate impact. He said: “It was blatantly obvious when I had a walk around Shrewsbury yesterday that loading bays were not being used to park in and double yellow lines were free of vehicles. The whole town was moving extremely well.

“We issued a few tickets, but they were for blatant transgressions of the regulations. All in all it seems to have gone very well.”

Mr Harper said the wardens spent most of their time talking to drivers to explain the new systems rather than giving out £60 penalty notices. He said the fines would be halved for motorists who paid the fine within 14 days, and increased to £90 if not paid within a month.
