College staff thrilled by status
Wednesday 29th November 2006, 7:15PM GMT.
Staff from a Telford College travelled to London today for a ceremony in which it was to be named as the first learning and skills beacon in Shropshire.
Telford College of Arts and Technology was hailed a beacon of educational excellence by the Quality Improvement Agency.
Principal Doug Boynton travelled to the capital with chairman of governors Mike Lowe.
Mr Boynton said: “We are absolutely thrilled. This is an accumulation of 12 months of hard work and a string of successes.
“We were the first college in the country to be graded as outstanding in every way by Ofsted and now ministers have recognised us as a learning and skills beacon and we will be asked to share our skills and achievements nationally.
“It’s been an awesome year and this just doesn’t get any better.”
The college was one of just 12 establishments that were being awarded beacon status at this afternoon’s ceremony.
Judges praised TCAT’s “outstanding performance in teaching and learning, and outstanding leadership and management”.
Telford MP David Wright, who also attended today’s ceremony, said: “The college provides an outstanding asset for Telford and all credit goes to those who work on the site.
“There are only a handful of organisations that have had beacon status awarded today and I’m very proud that Telford is one of them.”
