Driver dies after vehicle crashes

A driver was killed after his car struck a telegraph pole before flipping on to its roof near Shifnal. The 25-year-old was taken to Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital but later died.

The 25-year-old was taken to Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital but later died.He had suffered serious head injuries in the accident in Shaw Lane, yesterday. A woman, who was also in the silver Vauxhall Vectra car, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police spokesman Richard Ewels said: “The man is believed to have been the driver of a silver Vauxhall Vectra which left the road and struck a telegraph pole before rolling over.

“It happened on the unclassified road Shaw Lane, at its junction with Haughton Lane, shortly before 6.30pm yesterday.

Firefighters from Telford Central and Wellington, police and the ambulance service were called to the crash. Leading firefighter Bill Edwards, of Telford Central fire station, said the Vectra had ended up on its roof in the middle of the road.

The accident, which happened as the car travelled towards Telford, led to the road being closed for four hours. Shaw Lane is a narrow road leading from the A4169 in Shifnal through to the Nedge Hill area.

Police appealed for witnesses who saw the collision or spotted the car as it travelled along Shaw Lane towards Nedge Hill to call them on 08457 444888.

Meanehile, two 34-year-old women were taken to hospital after a two-car crash in Telford this morning.

Part of the A442 Eastern Primary was blocked after the accident involving a Ford Galaxy and Vauxhall Meriva between the Castlefields roundabout and Bridgnorth Road just after 9am. The women, one passenger from each car, were taken to the PRH as a precaution.
