Man charged over store robbery

Monday 20th November 2006, 8:30PM GMT.

Police have arrested a man in connection with a supermarket robbery at Gobowen. Three robbers raided the Co-Op store at The Cross a week ago, threatening staff and stealing cash from the tills.

Two of the women staff members were allegedly punched around the head.

Following extensive inquiries and public appeals for information, detectives have arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with the incident.

He has been charged with robbery and remanded in custody to appear at Shrewsbury Crown Court on November 27.

Detective Constable Nick Williams said today: “I’d like to thank the public for their assistance in this investigation.

“They have been of great help both on the night of the robbery, during the anniversary check the following night and in response to the witness appeals in the media.

“I would also urge anyone not already seen by the police who may have information to assist the inquiry, to please contact Oswestry CID on 08457 444888.”

The robbery happened at about 7pm last Monday. The raiders ran off towards Old Whittington Road. Police have been studying CCTV images in a bid to identify the robbers.
