Syndicate hits Euro jackpot

notes.jpgMembers of a Shropshire lottery syndicate were celebrating the win of their lives today after scooping £7 million in the EuroMillions draw.

The group of 33 people from Market Drayton had the lucky numbers in last night’s draw – making them just one of the seven British winners to share a huge jackpot prize. Each member of the winning syndicate will pick up about £212,000.

David Bowden, from Market Drayton, was one of the syndicate members whose lives will now be transformed by the win.

Mr Bowden said today he had been celebrating the win ever since the numbers were drawn last night and he had a “bad head” this morning.

He said he could not believe his good luck and the news was still sinking in today.

His wife Daryl said she had been due to go to work at 6am today but had instead stayed at home in a state of sheer joy. The couple said they would be using the money to pay off their mortgage.

Camelot said today seven Britons were believed to be among a total of 20 winners across Europe to collect the money.

Bosses said unconfirmed results for the draw indicated no ticket matched the five winning numbers and two Lucky Stars to take the entire estimated jackpot, thought to be more than £120 million.

The lucky Shropshire syndicate scooped the cash after the top prize rolled down and was distributed among the next tier of winners, who matched five numbers and one Lucky Star.

The numbers drawn were 12, 22, 32, 33 and 36. The Lucky Star numbers were two and six.

The UK had the largest number of winners last night, followed by France with four, Portugal and Spain with three each, Ireland with two and Belgium with one, a Camelot spokesman said.

The prize would have been the world’s biggest lottery prize yet if a single winner had claimed it.

Last night’s prize fund dwarfed the 115 million euros – £77 million – won by Limerick woman Dolores McNamara in July 2005. Punters were also given a few handy hints for picking winning lines ahead of the draw, with the most often drawn numbers 50, 1, 3, 12, 11, 8 and the least drawn numbers 28, 46, 17, 20, 22, 27.
