Bond back tougher than ever

Daniel Craig as James BondAgent 007 explodes back onto Shropshire’s cinema screens on Thursday for his 21st movie adventure, writes our Movie Blogger, Carl Jones. And Casino Royale, which marks Daniel Craig’s debut as Ian Fleming’s superspy, is the meanest, toughest yet.

The man with the Shropshire-based father proved to be a controversial choice when he was cast to replace Pierce Brosnan last year.

Too bland, some said. Too blond, others argued. There was even an internet-based campaign seeking to encourage fans to boycott the film.

But the proof of the pudding is in the eating – and Casino Royale is a triumph. Blending the mood of the Jason Bourne movies with the exotic locations for which 007 has become famed, it takes us back to the very beginnings of the Bond story.

We learn how he gained his licence to kill, how his 00-career got off to a less than slick beginning, and why he came to be the emotionally detached tough-guy we have known and loved over more than four decades.

Craig means business. The 38-year-old is closer to the Bond of Ian Fleming’s books than any of his predecessors, and totally convincing in a role which forces him to shed blood for the cause on numerous occasions.

You’ll be shaken, stirred and shocked by Casino Royale. Not to mention hugely entertained.

* The Shropshire Star is producing a four-page Casino Royale special on Thursday with Carl’s full review of the movie. We also go behind the scenes with the 007 stunt team, test your 007 knowledge, and give away some fabulous prizes which money can’t buy . . . don’t miss Thursday’s Star. It’s licenced to thrill.
