Never mind the dogs…
Monday 6th November 2006, 2:16PM GMT.
Replying to “Name and address supplied” writing on Rottweilers (letters, October 17), I can only presume the writer is a member of an anti-dog brigade. Just think if all dogs were banned – no guide dogs, no hearing dogs for the deaf, no companion dogs for the disabledand/or elderly, no police dogs, no military dogs, no sniffer dogs for drugs and/or explosives etc.
Many more people would die – some slowly, lonely and miserable.
Yes, guns have been banned for a long time but this ban has not prevented irresponsible people shooting and killing others.
My heart sank when I read the comments of the “reputable” Shropshire breeder of Rottweilers.
If a dog, any dog, is brought up correctly by a caring owner, that owner would be extremely sensitive when introducing the dog to any new small member of the family.
Problem dogs belong to problem owners. The dogs in question would probably never have been a problem if they had been bred with care and treated correctly.
I have owned Rottweilers for almost 30 years, I have made every effort to ensure that they were all caringly reared. In fact my mantra is “Never mind the dog, beware of the owner”, and I will defend my right to own the lovely breed of my choice for as long as I am able.
As to the blanket remark “far sooner see all dogs banned than one more child die unnecessarily”, would he/she ban all cars or put down all 14-year-olds because a “joy rider” killed a child in a pushchair?
