Sex shame GP is struck off
Friday 3rd November 2006, 3:11PM GMT.
A Shrewsbury doctor was today struck off the medical register and banned from working in Britain after a General Medical Council hearing found he was unfit to practise.
Dr Antony Pryce Jones, pictured, had an “improper” relationship with a patient and indecently assaulted another.
The GP also saw female patients without a chaperone, despite being forbidden by a primary care trust.
Today a panel of doctors and lay members sitting at the GMC offices in Manchester decided his actions warranted the toughest of sanctions.
The panel found that his behaviour demonstrated a “harmful, deep-seated attitudinal problem”.
They also criticised the disgraced doctor for maintaining his innocence throughout a crown court trial and GMC proceedings.
Panel chairman Dr Brian Alderman said: “The panel has determined, taking all these matters into account, that Dr Jones’s behaviour is fundamentally incompatible with him continuing to be a registered medical practitioner and has determined that suspension is insufficient.
“Accordingly, the panel has determined to erase Dr Jones’s name from the Medical Register. The panel considers that his consistent denial of any wrongdoing, which has been tested in the courts, illustrates Dr Jones’s lack of remorse and lack of insight into the matters before this panel.
“Dr Jones abused his position of trust and violated the rights of patients A and B. His behaviour has been a serious departure from the professional standards expected of him.
“If Dr Jones does lodge an appeal, the immediate suspension will remain in force until the substantive direction takes effect.”
The panel concluded that his behaviour was “unacceptable” in the medical profession. Dr Jones has 28 days to appeal against his ban.
He was convicted in 2004 of indecently assaulting a woman known as Patient B, and was suspended from treating patients while the GMC decided on a course of action. He worked at Oxley Health Centre in Wolverhampton.
