It’s official. The Johnstone Paints Trophy is without doubt the finest example of how just how exciting and riveting cup football can be, writes our Shrewsbury Town blogger David Craig.

Just two weeks after putting Hereford to the sword, Yeovil were easily brushed aside on Tuesday night, and we now find Salop in the Southern Area quarter finals no less, alongside such giants as Nottingham Forest and erm . . Millwall.

Jeepers. Is that the Millenium Stadium i see on the horizon? Not only did Salop win, but we even managed to play some pretty decent attractive football, which has not been our forte in recent weeks.

The reasons for this change in style were pretty evident to myself. Firstly, Ben Herd’s return at right back. Secondly, Dave Edwards playing in the middle of the park, as opposed to stuck out on the wing. And thirdly Michael Symes, pictured.

Since he signed for the Town, Symes’ performances have gradually been increasing in quality, and while he wasn’t exactly pitched against the likes of say Cannavaro or Nesta on Tuesday, he turned in a pretty awesome display.

Even my father was moved to say that Symes’ performance was one of the most complete centre forward displays he’d ever seen down at the Meadow, and my father has seen some rubbish over the years! He even went so far to say Symes was better than Neil Lyne! A bold statement if ever there was one.

Surely, Mr Peters will start with pretty much the same side on Saturday. If Ben Herd is replaced at right back by Sagi Burton, then I will chew my own arms off and sell them at the Buffet.

So, Wycombe come to town this weekend. Another tricky game, although hopefully their goalkeeper will re-enact last year’s fixture by throwing the ball into his own net. Happy memories. A victory is simply essential though, so any charity from the opposition would be most welcome.
