Birthday crash kills grandad

Monday 30th October 2006, 3:49PM GMT.

Delivery driver Ronald Birch, of Stirchley, died when his blue Ford Transit van was involved in a crash with a loaded cattle wagon on the A51 in Cheshire. The road was closed for eight hours as emergency services worked to release both drivers after the collision at the Red Fox traffic lights in Tilstone Fearnall, near Tarporley, on Friday night.

Mr Birch’s family today said they were devastated by his death and paid tribute to an “honest and friendly” man who had worked as a driver for more than 30 years.

He is survived by his wife Fiona, sons Andy, 27, Jamie, 23, and five-year-old grandson Jordan.

His family today said: “Ron was a loving, honest, friendly guy who was passionate about his job as a delivery driver, which was his profession for over 30 years.

Smile

“He always had a friendly smile and did whatever he could to help others, for example contributing the use of his van and time to take much-needed donated supplies to the people of Boscastle after their flood disaster.”

They added: “He loved his speedway and photography, was a friend to all and made a lasting impression on everyone he met.

“The family are very close and are devastated with his loss, which tragically occurred on his 58th birthday whilst the family were waiting at home for his return to celebrate.”

Mr Birch died following injuries suffered in the accident which happened at 6.30pm on Friday.

He was returning to Telford to celebrate his birthday with his family when his van was involved in a collision with the cattle wagon which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the wagon, which was carrying about 20 cattle, was taken to the Leighton Hospital in Cheshire with non-serious injuries.

Firefighters battled for about an hour to release both drivers and the road was closed until 2.30am.
