Recycling system is rubbish
Wednesday 25th October 2006, 9:36AM BST.
This mainly could be caused because the council (although they have provided each house with a red recycle box) haven’t considered collecting plastic bottles, therefore people are having to dispose of them in their wheelie bins causing them to fill up, and use black bin bags which then get left outside.
And the consequences of this is that rubbish gets scattered and left all over the streets.
Half the time the council don’t collect your unwanted recycle waste so therefore you’re left with all your disposable waste and end up having to go to the reycle centre yourself.
Although the council have a new system setting up which provides bigger and more containers, they still have not considered or provided one for the plastic bottles - you’ll find there’s one situated at the recycling centre in Halesfield.
Reader comments:
“Yes, it is a shame that plastic, a major non bio-degradable source of rubbish is not collected. We will just have to wait until national recycling targets are raised again, then your council will be threatening to prosecute you for not recycling or weighing your rubbish on a “pay-as-you-throw” basis (this has seriously been suggested!). In Shrewsbury our rubbish collection service would not take some old kitchen units that were next to our bin. The most rude and unhelpful waste collection officer told us that we would have to take them to the Materials Recycling Facility. This means WE have to drive to the other side of town to throw away non-recyclable rubbish – why don’t the council take it, like they are paid to?” Keith
