Protesters demand U-turn
Tuesday 24th October 2006, 12:04PM BST.
The board was this afternoon being recommended to close Whitcliffe Ward, at Ludlow Hospital, to save around £500,000.
However, members of the Friends of Ludlow Hospital, some of whom are pictured, were hoping to persuade the PCT to grant a stay of execution for Whitcliffe Ward, which cares for elderly and mentally infirm patients.
Today Pat Hansen, spokeswoman for the friends, said: “We will be asking the PCT some very difficult questions. If they cannot provide the answers to them, they will not be in a position to rubber-stamp the closure of Whitcliffe.
“The PCT has told people it can save £500,000 by closing Whitcliffe. But it has not told anyone how it has arrived at that figure. We want some proper answers.”
Around 40 people were travelling by coach from Ludlow for the PCT’s board meeting, in Shrewsbury, at 2pm. More people were travelling by car and protesters from Bishop’s Castle were also going to the meeting.
Martin Taylor-Smith, deputy chairman of the hospital’s league of friends, said there were “many holes” in the PCT’s argument for closure.
