Airport parts firm takes off
Monday 23rd October 2006, 7:28PM BST.
But now the firm is growing at an amazing rate thanks to a decision to branch into supplying the same kind of products for large commercial vehicles.
The business acumen of Jason Kirkham, Graham Hines and Paul Williams, has seen their company treble turnover in the last 15 months and take on new staff. Paul Williams and Graham Hines are pictured.
And it has also seen the company, which also trades under the name of Globe Transport Products, move home, not once but twice.
Jason said: “We started off in Cambrian House in Shrewsbury in a small office. When we set up we didn’t really need to hold a lot of stock for the airline industry, because there is so much lead time involved.
“We didn’t need to stock it as we could source the part and supply it.”
Globe supplies parts to companies such as Swissport which act as handlers for airlines including American Airlines and British Airways.
Paul said: “It was May 2002 when we started doing airport parts. Then we had an opportunity to branch out and sell a range of commercial vehicle parts and that was a major addition to the business.
“It enabled us to treble our turnover, and the commercial vehicle market was a really big add-on to the business.”
But space was an issue. Initially Globe Dynamics moved to a new home in Oswestry.
“With the commercial vehicle side, we needed to have stock so we needed space. Our first warehouse in Oswestry was 1,000 sq ft but then we needed more room and ended up taking on 3,000 sq ft just down the road.”
The company’s new base is on Mile Oak Industrial Estate, conveniently placed for access to local customers as well as its proximity to the north west and Wales.
Globe is now hoping to tap into a more local customer base among hauliers and other large commercial vehicle operators.
Paul said: “We cover Shropshire, Mid Wales and North Wales but also up and down the country from Scotland to Plymouth, we have distributors working for us.
Jason added: “We are a bit different because we really specialise in three ranges of vehicle. Where normal parts suppliers will sell standard items for a wide range of vehicles, we do a really, really wide range for three vehicles.”
Globe focuses on providing parts for Scania, Volvo and Daf.
“What we do for those vehicles is really comprehensive, we stock a lot of parts you would only be able to get a from a dealer where as our competitors might do 20 items for each, we might do 300 or 3,000 for the Scania so we can offer a complete package.
“And because we outsource products, we try and do the whole thing. We have the supply line for the truck lines, and a lot of the truck parts fit the airline industry, so we are more of a single shop.”
Globe’s directors know that their company is unlikely to see the same rate of growth again in the near future – but still they are ambitious.
“There is so much more out there for us to go at. We wanted to get the business on a strong footing, we have certainly done that. But there is still so much we can do.”
