Fly plague poultry farm appeals
Thursday 19th October 2006, 8:18PM BST.
Lloyds Animal Feeds has appealed after scientific tests by North Shropshire District Council found a link between the farm and a fly problem in Stoke-on-Tern.
An abatement order was issued in August ordering the farm to take steps immediately to reduce fly numbers.
But the firm is appealing against the order to a magistrates court.
Sean Allcock, of Langley Dale, called for action during the summer as the insects were swarming around his home, making his family’s life a misery.
He said today: “We have had a big influx of flies again recently and I have complained to the environmental health department.
“We had about 60 to 70 flies in the kitchen the other day – it is not as bad but they are still there. We are being asked to supply witness statements to the district council.”
Council spokeswoman Rian Bentley confirmed Lloyds had appealed against the order. She said: “The council has contacted the residents relevant to the Lloyds incident and will be going to visit them to take witness statements.
“If there are any other people who would like to submit a statement they can contact North Shropshire District Council and ask for Debbie Ward on (01939) 238447. The other company issued with an abatement order has not appealed.”
No-one from Lloyds was available to comment today.
Lab tests were carried out after flies were collected from homes at Stoke-on-Tern. District council officers had them analysed after more than 50 people packed a public meeting to protest over the problem.
