Post Office hit by cash crisis
Wednesday 18th October 2006, 9:09PM BST.
Staff have been turning away customers since the computer system went down on Monday. The system at the WH Smith branch finally came back on line at 10.15am today.
Post Office bosses apologised for the disruption at the branch, which opened only three-and-a-half weeks ago amid angry protests after the closure of the town’s High Street site.
Royal Mail spokeswoman Sue Dakin said: “It was down a long time and longer than anyone could have wished but we could not have foreseen this.”
She said the problem had been on a BT line into the branch and not with the computers themselves.
Andy Fenner, 51, of St Mary’s Court, Shrewsbury, said he was among dozens of people unable to get money.
He said: “I am lucky because I asked a friend and they lent me money to get the train to see my relatives. But some of the people in the queues were very upset.
“I was told I could go to Abbey Foregate . . . but what about those who have trouble getting around?”
Maria Lawrence, 67, of Steepside, Shrewsbury, said she was furious because the post office did not have any road tax discs.
She said: “This is the first time I have been to the new post office and I do not like it.”
