Councillor quit threat over row

Wednesday 18th October 2006, 9:11PM BST.

It followed a stormy debate which developed after he was twice reported to the Standards Board by mayor Councillor Iain Seivewright and Councillor Philip Cookson.

He had called on the mayor to give him a full public apology during a statement which he gave to members before declaring an interest and leaving the debate.

When he returned at the end of the discussion, Councillor Cottrell asked the mayor what decision had been made by the council and was told that no resolution had been made.

Councillor Cottrell then said he would be resigning and stormed out, claiming the council had failed to solve a “simple problem”.

He said today he would consider his position over the next few days but said he was strongly thinking of resigning. “My position is in limbo, I really have not made up my mind,” Councillor Cottrell said.

The complaints to the Standards Board, alleging a breach of local government code of conduct, followed a letter from Councillor Cottrell to all members asking for the council’s help in dealing with a problem at Bridgnorth cemetery that came to light over tidying up his parents’ grave.

The board found there was no breach of the code of conduct, although Councillors Seivewright and Cookson appealed against the decision.

Councillor Seivewright said today: “As far as I, Councillor Cookson and the council are concerned, we hope the matter is now closed.”
