Model group set for more time

The Maesbury Community Action Group is fighting the bid by the Oswestry and District Flying Club to use a field near the village school for model flying.
Protesters say the venture will be noisy and will affect birds and livestock. But the club says that having more days on which to fly could help lessen any disturbance to the community.
The club, which has 11 members, has used the land for the last two years. Members can fly their model planes and gliders for up to 28 days a year under a permitted development order.
Organiser Mervyn Davies today said this was very restrictive. “Members want the flexibility to turn up at their convenience,” he said.
Five letters of objection and a 63-signature petition have been sent to the council from those concerned that the aircraft will cause a noise nuisance and a danger to the public.
But Mr Davies said the club and the national model flying organisation had very strict rules about flying.
Aircraft could not take off within 500 metres or fly within 200 metres of a premises, he said.
A report to tomorrow’s Oswestry Borough Council development control meeting says noise readings showed that the major noise source in the area was road traffic and overflying military helicopters.
Planning officers have recommended granting planning permission limited to the hours of 9am and 7pm Mondays to Saturdays and 10am to 7pm Sundays and bank holidays.
