60 jobs go in move to China

Tuesday 10th October 2006, 11:59AM BST.

Manufacturing work at the firm, which produces television brackets and wall mounts, is set to cease before the end of the year.

A spokeswoman today said the decision followed a consultation period with the GMB union and staff which ended yesterday.

It has been put down to increased costs and the pressure of global competition which bosses say has made moving manufacturing to China necessary to safeguard the future of the business.

However, the Telford site will remain the company’s world headquarters, housing its sales, marketing, finance and customer service operations.

Managers also hope to set up a World Innovation Centre at the site to house design and development.

The company has operated in Telford, its only UK base, since 1978.

Managing director Andrew Dimond today blamed the need to move the manufacturing operation on “increasing costs of raw materials and energy and the increased global competition.”

GMB union organiser Mark Bergman said: “AVF can’t survive as a business by continuing to make the brackets in this country because it’s just too expensive.”
