Bureau site may face demolition

Saturday 7th October 2006, 9:52PM BST.

However, bureau chiefs are confident about the service’s future in the town and have said it is continuing from a temporary base.

More than 20 firefighters were called to St Mary’s Street to tackle the blaze in July which destroyed the roof of the building that houses the CAB and severely damaged the flats above the bureau known as Lord Clive Chambers.

Today, CAB service director Liz Warren said: “The actual building itself we believe is going to be demolished but it’s going to be a long time before anything happens there.

“However, we never close and our advisors and case workers are working out of our Whitchurch office. All the telephone work is being dealt with from there.

“Face-to-face appointments for advice are also going ahead in Market Drayton at the Raven Centre, opposite Morrisons supermarket, on Wednesdays.”

She said CAB staff were being absolutely wonderful and doing everything they could under the circumstances. Case worker appointments were also being run from the Customer First Contact Centre by the library in Cheshire Street.

Mrs Warren said: “Obviously it’s slightly more difficult for people to contact us as they can’t just pop in at Market Drayton, but the phone lines are operating and we have the other services back in the town.

“We understand from the landlord that demolition of the former building is likely.”

Residents can call (01630) 657137 if they have queries for the CAB.
