Battle vow on libraries

Thursday 5th October 2006, 8:06PM BST.

Banner-waving residents of Llanfair Caereinion marched on County Hall in Llandrindod Wells earlier this year to force councillors to rethink closing the service to save money. Powys County Council had planned to close three libraries, including Llanfair Caereinion.

The issue is set to be discussed by Powys County Council members again this month. A spokesman for the town’s Save Our Library Campaign Group said: “Do they plan to wait until we run out of energy to resist?

“We wish to make a clear and unequivocal statement that we will – in the words of Winston Churchill – ‘never surrender’.

“Llanfair Caereinion is a town which needs its library.”

A public meeting will be held on Monday at 7.30pm at the Institute in Llanfair.

Campaigners say they hope residents will turn out again and make their voices heard.

“We want to make the council realise the strength of public opinion here in the town,” said the spokesman.

“There will be a speech by Welsh Assembly member Mick Bates, supported by a range of guest speakers from Llanfair and other threatened libraries.

“This speech will be followed by a Question Time-style session and a full discussion.

“We urge people young and old to come and speak their minds.

“Our library will never close.”

The council’s board voted last July to close the libraries at Llanfair Caereinion, Llanwrtyd Wells and Talgarth in a bid to save £56,000.

But the authority’s scrutiny committee called in the decision, at the request of councillors for the three towns.

The scrutiny committee discussed the issue in August.

But it failed to reach a conclusion, so the matter must now be decided at the next meeting of the full council.

Plans to close the libraries had to be put on hold while the decision was being debated by councillors after pressure from campaigners.
