The events are being organised by chartered surveyors Berrys at various sites so farmers can chat in confidence with specialist advisers about topics such as Single Payment mapping issues, cross-compliance, rural business opportunities, cropping options, farm waste exemptions, soil management plans and Environmental Stewardship.

The sessions will take place tomorrow at Bishop’s Castle and Stanton Lacy, on October 12 at Hodnet and Welshampton and on October 17 at Maesbury Marsh and Shrewsbury.

“Farmers are facing a stream of new legislation and it is hard for them to keep up to date with what’s new, yet alone know how it affects them and their business,” said Stephen Locke, a senior practitioner with Berrys.

“With the closure of Allscott sugar factory, arable farmers in particular are facing challenging times but we can help them decide how to make the most profitable use of their sugar beet ground. Environmental Stewardship may be an option for some while others will be looking to grow alternative crops,” he said.

“We want to ensure that farmers are fully aware of their obligations under the Single Payment Scheme. For instance, farmers should now have completed a soil management plan to make available for inspection. Failure to do so could mean a reduction to their Single Payment.”
