Three extra CCTV cameras

Saturday 30th September 2006, 11:15PM BST.

Councillors say they are delighted the three new spy cameras will be in place to continue their fight against crime.

Bridgnorth Town Council has applied for planning permission to place the cameras in High Street, East Castle Street and Castle Walk.

Chairman of the Crime Prevention Panel, Councillor Connie Baines, said that the extra cameras would increase the level of coverage in the town centre.

She said: “We are getting very good results and very good co-operation with the shops.

“We have the Shop Watch radios in conjunction with the CCTV and we are making a big impact on crime in Bridgnorth.

“There will be 11 cameras overall and consideration is being given to other cameras in Bridgnorth in the future.

“The police have access to the cameras at all times and we now have a paid co-ordinator in charge of running the system,” she added.

Town clerk, Kathy James, said that the cameras would be installed as soon as planning permission was granted, which usually takes around a month.

The town’s CCTV system records for 24 hours a day and is be manned into the early hours of the morning seven days a week.

Constable Ram Aston, of Bridgnorth police, said everyone was pulling together to improve Bridgnorth as a town – from clamping down on illegal parking to arresting shoplifters.
