Chaos fears on new car law

Now Market Drayton town councillors are demanding talks about the new system for on-street parking with Shropshire County Council chiefs.

They are also keen to see alternative areas found for parking to ease potential problems.

The new arrangements for parking enforcement will be brought in on November 20 by Shropshire County Council and North Shropshire District Council.

The move aims to help reduce congestion and improve road safety.

But at a meeting of Market Drayton Town Council’s community and governance committee this week, councillors called for talks with the district and county councils because they want to know if the effects of deregulation have been properly addressed.

Committee chairman Councillor Roger Hughes said: “It is going to drive people parking illegally in the town centre into nearby residential areas like Frogmore Road and the Burgage where there is already a problem.

“There will also come a time when the attendants will start putting fixed penalty notices on cars and drivers will go away and not come back to Market Drayton to shop.”

Councillor Hughes added that the situation for the Wednesday market was also a concern, as there was simply not enough room to accommodate all the people who came to shop.

“It’s a serious problem and it needs to be addressed,” he said.
