Sandy to throw hat in for 2010

Nick Faldo has already been named captain in 2008 when the contest will take place in Valhalla, Kentucky.

But Lyle, pictured, already has one eye on the renewal two years later which will be held at Celtic Manor in Wales.

“I will put my name in the pot for 2010 and see what comes out,” said Lyle, speaking at Hill Valley yesterday.

“It’s a big job and the kind of thing you need to work on for years. I enjoyed the K Club and it’s give me a taste and I know what’s involved behind the scenes.

“It could be possible in 2010 but that would be my cut-off point. I would not be interested in 2014 at Gleneagles and Monty’s (Colin Montgomerie) name is written all over that – if he’s not still playing.”

Lyle is as yet unsure whether he will be required as part of Faldo’s captaincy team when Europe defend the Cup in America.

“I will be available for Nick as a vice-captain but that is a big job as well,” added the 48-year-old.

“Nobody sends you letter to say this is what you have to do.

“You don’t know if you are going to be a waiter carrying drinks out or giving vital instructions. But it was hands on and we were on radios and reporting to Woosie.

“Ian asked me two months before the announcement. We were going over to Ireland and he said ‘Do you want to be involved in the Ryder Cup?

“When he officially announced his vice captains at the K Club, I was on the golf course and had no idea and people were coming up saying congratulations.”
